A Toilet Is Not a Rocking Chair; You May Need a Toilet Flange Repair

Have you noticed that your bathroom toilet seems to rock back and forth when you sit on it while reminding you of a seesaw? Have you found yourself cleaning up wastewater along the floor besides the toilet in your bathroom and wonder where it is coming from? Could it be that you are in need of a toilet flange repair?

Let us say you have found a water leak by observing where the toilet leak is affecting the floor of your bathroom, at the base, as it sits on the floor. You have determined that to repair the toilet, you must turn off the water supply and lift the toilet out of its place on the floor. The toilet is set aside with all the necessary precaution of care. Looking down, you will see a precut hole in the floor; there you will find the draining system of the toilet. A horn shaped metal plumbing flange connects with a wax ring to the toilet while sealing the drainage of waste from the toilet so it can flow out and away.

The toilet flange must be level with the floor and in good working order for the best seal possible. Its design is to fit the toilet in the bathroom. If the flange is off level one way or the other, up or down, the seal will not meet properly for your toilet. If the flange is to higher or lower than a quarter inch, you can use toilet flange extenders to extend the flange.

Some simpler forms of toilet flange repair include repairing slightly damaged flanges by putting the closet bolt into a repair ring or tab, tightening the ring or tab aligned with the flange thereby securing the toilet. However, when using a flange repair ring, you will need to seal the ring by beading silicone caulking around a clean flange, then placing the ring onto the flange and secure the toilet in place.

If upon looking at the flange and plumbing, you find no damage or anything in need of repair, remember it is possible the only thing required is a new wax-sealing ring. To replace the wax ring, simply use a putty knife to scrape off the old wax along the surface making sure it is level and clean you then place a new wax ring over the flange and sit the toilet down securely on them both and fasten it down.

Keep in mind that a toilet that rocks may have a broken flange, since a toilets design features sitting and not rocking. However, an uneven floor or over tightening of the toilet flange nuts can cause damage to a flange. If you find that there is damage to the actual floor, you will have to repair the floor and secure the flange with a support bracket, since it will transfer the weight to solid flooring. If the actual plumbing and flooring are damaged you may have to do some serious repairs, replacements and even remodeling. When a leak is long standing and extensive, it can do major damage to finished flooring while being costly to repair or replace. If the floor feels spongy or wobbly, you more than likely have more to do than a simple toilet flange repair.
