Do It Yourself Porcelain Sink Repair

Porcelain is one of the most protective surfaces for your sinks and bathtubs; it is a very popular choice since it is so durable and compliments any home decor. However, it is made of glass and metal that fuse together under a very high heat. It can be damaged, however, you can do a simple porcelain sink repair with a do it your self kit, or call you can call a professional in to help you, if the porcelain sink repair is more than you can handle on your own. Keep in mind that a professional porcelain sink repair will look professional and last much longer than a do it yourself kit.

Remember when doing porcelain sink repair is that if the crack or chip is in a location that stays wet, such as inside the basin of the sink or around the faucet area, the new repair has not much of a chance to stay repaired. However, if the damage to the porcelain sinks, is in an area that does stay dry, you have a much better chance in the repair staying fixed in porcelain sinks.

For porcelain sink repair, you will need a few materials and tools to aid you. For instance, you will need a high gloss, alkyd-based paint that matches your porcelain in as close a color as possible, porcelain repair compound, medium grit sandpaper or emery cloth, rubbing alcohol, a single edged razor blade, a tongue depressor or wooden dowel stick for mixing your porcelain sink repair compound. You will also need a clean piece of tile or glass to mix the repair compound on, some cotton swabs, fingernail polish remover and some clean cloths.

Make sure the sink is clean and dry. Then you will use the medium grit sandpaper or emery cloth to sand off the area that is in need of repair, and that area only since sanding any further will only scratch the surrounding porcelain and make it weak. However, do sand the area that needs repair until it is smooth. After you finish sanding the area, take a cloth that is damp from rubbing alcohol and wipe the sanded area clean of debris. Allow the area to dry.

Next, you will take the piece of tile or glass and mix together small amounts of the high gloss alkyd-based paint and the repair compound. Do your best to match up the color to the porcelain sink, however if you find the mix is to dark in color, you should mix another batch while using less of the paint than before. Once you are satisfied with the color match, take the razor blade and scoop up some of the compound mix and apply it to the middle of the chipped area, then simply keep adding until the hole is filled and overlapping the edges just a bit. Next, you will use the razor to scrape off the excess compound mixture to make the mixture flush with the surface of the sink and let it dry.

Once the area is completely dry, take the cotton swab and soak it in the fingernail polish remover. Use this to blend in the edges of the compound mixture to the porcelain itself. Then simply let that dry as well.
